Beijing Summer Concert Series

Kunan and I went to the Beijing Pop Festival last weekend and rocked like champs. Photographic evidence follows. Brett Anderson was there, thats right loyal blog readers - THE Brett Anderson. Brett Anderson of Suede fame. Who is Suede you ask? I have no clue. Nine Inch Nails was there and Public Enemy did its best without Flava Flav or their normal DJ who I just found out is no longer Terminator X. According to Wikipedia Terminator X is now running an ostrich farm in South Carolina. Uh, weird.
Anyway, it was fun. The crowd was a strange mix of people. I am assuming this is because of the drastic variations in types of music that was presented. There were older Chinese rock and roll guys there for Cui Jin and Australians into industrial metal. Everyone got along fairly well.
OK photos. Enjoy. Kia shows up here on Thursday which is totally exciting.

Kunan + giant mojitos = awesome
The stage was set up with these rows of seats in the front. It was awesome to watch the security guards trying to make people sit down as the performances went on. They seriously wanted everyone to sit in their seats the whole time it was absolutely ridiculous.
OK, these go in series. There were these seats that the security guards were sitting in. We got away with it for a while....

Strangely enough, they never asked me to get up only Kunan....

Nine Inch Nails brought props.

Oh Hellz No

On Tuesday I was welcomed back to Beijing in a most unpleasant way. I got off of my 11 hour flight and headed into the office, because, well, I am just that good of an employee, and after about 4 hours of work I headed back to my hotel to get some rest. I strode confidently past the front desk and headed up to my little corner of Beijing on the 7th floor. I swiped my magnetic key and opened the door to a mess. There was some garbage on the floor of my kitchen. As my eyes panned up I realized that there was something very, very wrong. The freezer drawers were piled on my counter and there were various plastic bags thrown about the room. Some random papers I left were on the tables but other than that, everything I owned was gone. Totally gone. Electronics, clothing, toiletries, shoes, food, everything. I was convinced my sister (who had been staying in my place while I was in California) had left the door open and a band of Beijing bandits (I kind of imagined kung-fu versions of the Hamburglar) had run off with my things. Once I pulled my head together I called the front desk to explain that everything which had been in my apartment had vaporized. They proceeded to explain to me that I had checked out. Checked out, er no. So I head down to the front desk to explain that I had not checked out and abandoned my things to the hotel staff. They proceeded to apologize (kind of, kind of laugh about the situation) and to be honest I was not in the mood. 11 hours on a plane, 4am California time arguing about whether I had checked out and whose fault the situation was was not doing it for me. So the hotel staff puts me up in a temporary room for the night which had just been abandoned by a chain smoker and tell me that my things will be returned shortly. The next morning I woke up, headed down to my old apartment to find things still in the exact same state and steaming mad I tell the hotel staff that my stuff needs to be returned, in whole, by the evening. A work day later I come back to my apartment to find things surprisingly back to normal. Things were replaced in my apartment with a frightening sense of accuracy it was as though they had either a) expected me to come back or b) gone through my things before numerous times....
Yikes.
So my things are back, mostly, even my food was back although I hesitate to eat the frozen/refrigerated items because lord knows what happened to them during their 48 hour journey away from my fridge. The staff even put some flowers in my room as a apology. Yeah, I'm still not in the mood. I am a little concerned that my silent protest while I walk through the lobby is being mistaken as the same general disinterest that I likely displayed the first three months of my living at the apartment.
On lighter notes, Dad and Kirsten are in Tibet right now with Liz and are headed back to Beijing in a couple days. They expressed interest in Peking duck which I am obliged to help procure.

A Little Classic Pharcyde Goodness

Another music video. Consider yourself lucky I didn't put up the Wu Tang Gravel Pit video, 'cause I almost did.
Things are kosher here in Beijing - not literally kosher, I mean there is lots of pork being consumed - kosher as in good, copasetic. Weather has been amazing the last few days. Spent the weekend out of doors, touring Peking University and playing basketball on Sunday. I have some pictures form Peking U which I will post when I remember to bring my mini usb cord to work.
Travel plans are taking more shape for Kia's visit but there is still a lot of planning to do. Mostly I am just looking forward to spending some time with the wifey, a little Laotian adventure should be fun too.
Headed up to the Sierras when I am back in California with some coworkers for a little camping/fishing which should be great. Kia's going to come meet me and we will stay in South Lake Tahoe for a night too. There is a crazy tasty Thai restaurant there that is almost, almost worth driving all the way to Tahoe for....
I'm going to pack it in and head back to my apartment, didn't sleep well last night. Hope summer is shaping up well in other parts of the world.

I Got a Sickness, and the Only Cure is More Dilla

OK, this Dilla video is the sickness. Just had to post it. I know I am leaning pretty hard on video content, so sue me.
Went on an offsite with my work on Friday and came back on Saturday. It was at a resort about 30 minutes from work where they had water-slides and various other activities (fishing, bowling, tennis, badminton, ping pong, KTV - that's right). It looked like it was set up to be primarily a get away from the city within the city. In that sense it was a little strange. Other than that it was a pretty low key weekend. Finally watched Munich and Troy, they were good and bad respectively. Eric Bana was good in both, but I have decided I only want to see Brad Pitt play deranged characters (Gypsy in Snatch, Lunatic in 12 Monkeys and to a lesser degree Psychopath in Fight Club) other than that forget about it.
Headed back to California on 8/22 for about 10 days or so. Looking forward to catching up with folks and spending time with the wifey. After that its about another 3 months before I will be back in the states. Still working out travel for Kia and myself in September but I am sure which ever way it falls it will be a blast.
Enjoy the video.

Why Beijing Taxi Drivers are Scumbags....

So last night I was trying to catch a cab in the rain. It doesn't rain often here in Beijing so I was enjoying the fresh air as I stood at the side of the road waiting for a taxi. Naturally it was tough to flag down a taxi because of the rain and high demand for cabs. I waited 15 minutes, as the rain became a little bit harder, waiting patiently for a taxi to stop and even giving up taxis to other pedestrians waiting for cabs (I'm just that nice of a guy). After 15 or 20 minutes I begin to get extremely wet, wet to the point that I am getting concerned about my computer in my backpack - not to mention my digital SLR. Right about then a taxi comes up the road, available light on the top shining in the dark like a lighthouse to a wayward sailor. My taxi, no one else is anywhere near me mind you, slows, takes a look at me and drives off down the road for another passenger. Why? Why would a Beijing taxi driver decide not to pick me up? Is it because I am a foreigner? Experience says no. Is it because I am an intimidating person, a hulking bearded bear of a man? Experience also says no in this case. Is it because I look like I don't have money to pay the taxi fare? Definitely no, my regular use of the term "bu yao" to overzealous street vendors proves otherwise. Why then? After three or four cabs do the exact same thing over the next 15 minutes I begin to realize, the cabs aren't picking me up because I am fucking soaked. And I was soaked, wet almost all the way through. My shirt was soaked through and my jeans were well on their way and the cab drivers were not having it. I wasn't being picked up by a taxi because I was going to foul their crappy taxis with water, that's right, water. Once I realized this I became fairly unhappy and began walking. I walked for a while, stopping on occasion to try to flag another taxi, but mostly walking. I walked for 35 minutes, through rain rivers in the street, through mud, through being splashed by cars, through bands of rogue Beijing youths pointing and laughing, through foreign students saying "ni hao" with American accents, all the way back to my hotel computer and camera more or less intact, pride damaged.
Beijing Taxi Drivers are Scumbags. I am considering changing the title of my blog to reflect this. In fact, on the way back to my apartment I considered changing the theme of my blog to reflect how evil taxi drivers in Beijing were documenting and taking pictures of their evil faces and their unethical behaviors.
Then I realized that in the long run, who really gives a shit. Hell, I got a funny story out of the whole thing. That said, I have vowed a personal vendetta against all Beijing taxi drivers. That's right Beijing taxi drivers you have been warned. You just made "the list".

So you have seen this before? So what?

OK so I am admittedly the last person to become aware of the Flight of the Conchords guys but this is pretty funny.
Things are going well in China. I booked a ticket for Kia to come visit in September so the pressure is on now to get the travel plans lined up for the time she is here. We are planning on using the Autumn Festival break to do some traveling out of China, perhaps Tibet and Nepal but we haven't decided yet.
Summer in Beijing has been fairly good, overcast/hazy today. Tough to tell where the clouds end and the pollution begins. Ah industrialization, its a beautiful process.
I've been rediscovering the beauty of YouTube lately but still refuse to participate in the MySpace silliness - why? you ask - because I am not 15 years old.
Also, a belated happy birthday to Liz and Thomas (they share their birthdays 7/20) one of the two birthday overlaps between Kia and my families.
Getting a cold - I hope its a cold....

Mmmmm Food Additives

Made it back to Beijing on Tuesday of this week after about ten days back in California. Its been interesting moving between the two locations over the last couple of weeks mainly because it was relatively seamless to get back into the flow of things in SF/Mountain View and then into a routine when I got back to Beijing a couple days ago. It was good to see Kia and everyone back home but I have to admit I was aching for some pork buns by the time I got back on the plane to China. Seriously, even if they have cardboard in them they are scary delicious.
My sister sent me a box of books and winter coats - I think - and it is sitting at a post office somewhere so that will be my adventure for the weekend.
Kia and I are trying to pin down some travel plans for this fall while she is in Asia. Lots of things we want to see and do.
What else? Made a trip to Amoeba (aka the music store with the best return policy of all time) before I left San Francisco and scooped up some new cds. Got the re-release of Ruff Draft and the new Beastie Boys album (damn, their website is pretty sweet) both are pretty much awesome in completely different ways.
Its been beautiful in Beijing the last couple days, clear skies and sunshine, 90 degrees.
Hope everyone is well,
Matthew

U S A ... U S A ....

One of my coworkers asked me what I normally do in the US to celebrate the 4th of July. My answer to this was "nothing really". I guess this is wrong. We tend to eat processed meat and blow stuff up. Damn, I could go for a reindeer sausage and some roman candles right about now.
I am headed back to SF tomorrow and will be in the US until July 16th (Kia's birthday). People have been asking if I am going to do anything special when I get home. My response to these questions is "not really". I do have designs on eating some foods that I have been missing (Papalote here I come) and buying some clothing (apparently I am not a standard Chinese size, even in shoes). Other than that my plan is to try to avoid being a vegetable because of jet lag.

OK musical recommendation for the day: Citizen Cope
Yes, I am emotionally stable enough to put music other than gangsta rap on my blog.
Yes, I know that the lead singer kind of looks like Tina Majorino from Napoleon Dynamite and Big Love (watch Big Love if you haven't already started - its awesome).
Yes, I know that they opened at one point for Nelly Furtado.

Thats it. No photos this time. I have been lugging my camera with me just about everywhere but the process of taking it out of my backpack has been insurmountable.

Beer and Clams

Pretty rad combination really. Qingdao was a lot of fun and it was great to see Liz. We did the math and we hadn't seen each other since the Christmas before last. Whew.
Despite being entertaining Qingdao left little opportunities for photos. That said, I still took some in anticipation that people would want to see what it looks like. Too bad for those people as it was foggy. Its alright though, the only person who reads this blog is my dad or as Kunan calls him "Robert". Interestingly enough, maybe, because of the Chinese tradition of using family names first, I am often referred to as Robert here in China (its my middle name). Oh yeah, Dad, I found this tshirt which I am trying to decide whether I should buy for you. Dudley is my dad's middle name. While I am at it I will plug the Stonesthrow website where you can find more about Dudley Perkins. Stonesthrow also has one of the best podcasts out there for the hip hop nerd contingency who reads my blog (this is just me).

OK fine, Qingdao
Little sister.

Fog.

Fog made the spiderwebs more noticeable and photo-worthy.

One more of Liz. We went to this little gelato place and I cracked my dome on the ceiling when we climbed the stairs up to the loft. The gelato was good though and obviously Liz had a little sugar buzz going here.

Headed back to California on Friday for about 10 days for work and to see Kia. Looking forward to this a lot. I cannot believe its already been two months in China. See some of you in a week or so.

Its been a long time... I shouldn't have left you...

Not a lot to report on my front. I am headed to Qingdao to visit my sister on Friday. The city is known for beer and seafood apparently. Liz works on Saturday so I will be on my own (likely taking photos and partaking in seafood and beer). Beijing has been hazy the last week or so which should last the majority of the summer, until the sandstorms start. Awesome!
I went and got a haircut over the weekend. It was expensive by Beijing standards but I think it was worth it, you be the judge:

Alright, enough of that silliness. Kia threw some photos of her trip to Alaska on her picasa web album here
I decided to try to post more regularly, perhaps about music or some other non-travel related topic to break it up a bit. Also, I pointed this out to my dad but for everyone else's benefit you can now find my blog advertised in AdWords when you do searches, specifically "Matt Lewis" or "Matthew Robert Lewis", I couldn't afford "Matthew Lewis" probably because of that stupid Harry Potter kid. Damn.
Anyway, hope things are well with everyone. Drop me a line.

Mo' Hong Kong, Mo' Hong Kong, Mo' Hong Kong

Things are going pretty well in Beijing. I can't believe its already been a month. Looking forward to heading out to Qingdao to visit Liz in a few weeks and Kia is planning on heading out towards the end of June. Also, I should be back in California for a week or so in July for some work stuff for those of you who want to catch up in person.
So a few more photos from Hong Kong last weekend. These were taken during the day. We took the tram to the the top of Victoria Peak which offered some great views of the Hong Kong skyline.
First some photos just walking around the financial district.

The tram up was extremely steep. The angle doesn't look as intimidating in the photo as it was in person.

Naturally, at the top of the mountain was a gigantic mall.

From the outside it looked like a radar dish - kind of.

The view from the platform on top was spectacular though.

I swear I brought other tshirts with me to China but for whatever reason I am always wearing this one in photos.

Chao and Yiteng.

Kency and Yiteng.
So I am officially out of photo trips to post. I will have to put some extra effort in this week and actually post something more substantial than snapshots.

From AK to HK

Last weekend I went to Hong Kong with some coworkers. I had to handle my visa situation which was surpisingly easy. The rest of the time I spent touring around, shopping and eating. Took some pictures too. Check 'em out.

We went out the first night to Kowloon to view Hong Kong island at night. They do a light show where they light up the buildings to music. It was pretty weird. It kind of reminded me of the water show in Vegas at the Belagio.

Bruce was there.

The Jacky Chan store was totally in full force.

Went shopping afterwards in Kowloon after the light show and some dinner.

OK, thats it for now. As always more pics are here.

So What Else Is New...?

More a question than a statement. Just finished watching Band of Brothers (again). Pretty awesome show, if you haven't seen it yet watch it immediately. I need a haircut but I am afraid that I might go in and come out looking like this:

Depending on who you ask, this might not be a bad thing. I gotta work on my Mandarin....

Some more pics from last weekend, this time the Forbidden City. Went with Kunan again it wasn't quite as hot as the Summer Palace and surprisingly it was even less crowded.

Here is a picture of Kunan doing what I can only assume is the Captain Planet salute ( I can only hope that wikipedia has a good picture of Captain Planet doing the salute as wikipedia is blocked in China)

Some random pictures of the Forbidden City:

There is no way they use that boat for anything other than photos - looks pretty good though.

After the Forbidden City closed we went to this park and walked to the temple at the top to take some photos.

Shot of the Forbidden City from the hill.

Facing the opposite direction from the Forbidden City.

When we walked down the hill we found people singing in various choir groups throughout the park. This was the largest one. Kunan is in there somewhere getting a closer shot. I was a bit sheepish.

At the park exit they had a little bonzai garden which was actually pretty nice.

That's it for now. Drop me a line if you have a chance. I hope all is well with everyone.

Been Busy

(I don't know who that lady is....)
So I haven't posted much lately but I have been taking tons of photos and took a trip out to Hong Kong last weekend to work on my visa. I have pictures from a few touristy things in Beijing and Hong Kong and I will post them all over the next few days.
Here are some pictures from the Summer Palace in Beijing.

It was about 100 degrees out and crowded with people

The view was great from the top of the peak even if the skyline was a bit hazy.

I went to the palace with my friend Kunan who is in town from Malaysia right now.

Some more shots from the top of the peak.

A couple more shots from across the water.
The aptly named 17 hole bridge.

The scenery was nice but pretty obviously man made to aid in framing photos. The rocks below bordered on styrofoam.
